Personal Work: Food Photography with Heavenly Waffles
Who can deny a delicious breakfast of waffles and berries?! Definitely not me.
I love eating a good breakfast spread almost as much I love shooting one, and with this personal shoot I set out to create the perfect plate of waffles. Waffles provide a lot of opportunities to play with texture and light, and I definitely took advantage of that! I brought in blackberries and raspberries for pops of color, focused on the specular highlights of the syrup, and made sure to add some walnuts and whipped cream for some addition textures.
At the end of the shoot, I decided to play with my lighting. I placed a bare strobe light in various positions around the waffle, taking a photo each time the flash was in a new spot. The result is this super fun gif that effectively shows the impact lighting can have on a subject!
I’m happy with how all of the images came out, but I particularly enjoy the hero image shown above. I wanted to capture the perfect bite on a fork, and while fiddling with my camera I noticed the syrup begin to drip off of the waffle. I quickly started shooting, hoping to get something good as the syrup began to form the perfect droplet. I was pretty pleased when I saw what I managed to capture!
